After all, it's not as if these cartoons are making fun of you in any way, right? But then again, when you start to see Dilbert strips tacked up on your employees' cubicle walls, it is easy to start second-guessing this self-assuredness. Even though it might seem silly or paranoid to consider that Dilbert has any effect on morale, it is also difficult to push from your mind those articles you read that, you know, said that Dilbert actually does have a negative impact on employee morale. And so the question becomes, are Dilbert cartoons bad for employee morale?

One consideration to keep at the forefront of this discussion is the fact that humor, of course, is good for morale. Certainly, the fact that these strips caused your employees to laugh is a positive sign.

Of course, the issue is that light jabs at corporate culture are at the root of most of these laughs. And when you see a cartoon on someone's wall where the boss is made fun of, it is difficult to keep your mind from wandering to the question: Why did this employee post this particular cartoon on their wall? But before you jump to conclusions and ban these cartoons from the walls of cubicles, consider whether the solution is so simple. After all, this would likely do nothing more than further the sometimes rampant view among employees in corporate America that the hierarchy is out of touch.

Don't just order that all comic strips be taken down from office walls; instead, you ought to take the time to look at these comic strips yourself. As the root of the humor in many of these strips is the jokes made about the way corporate culture is run, there is a chance - considering that your employees deemed the strips appropriate enough to be tacked up in their cubicle - that the problem has nothing to do with the comic strip itself. The problem might be with the way your company itself is run!

Many businesses actually have banned Dilbert from cubicle walls, which turns this into a serious discussion even if it seems trivial on the surface. Every boss wants to improve morale around the office, but instead of banning humor and hoping it will do anything but alienate employees, you should aim to improve employee morale by improving all the ways in which your business itself is run!
